Jason attended Traner center School and Sparks High School where he excelled academically in the nascent Washoe County School District Honors Program. Through scholarships and a full-time job, Jason attended the University of Nevada, where he became involved with student government and public service. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry Jason worked full time and served as ASUN Agriculture Senator, Student Body Vice President, Student Body President and University of Nevada System Student Legislative Spokesman. Along the way, he received many honors and awards, including being chosen to participate in the U.S. – Soviet Student Leadership Exchange. One of only two students chosen from west of the Mississippi, Jason spent three weeks meeting with Baltic and Soviet leaders just as the Union was breaking apart.
As a graduate student pursuing a doctorate in Environmental Sciences and Health, Jason continued to work full time. His research led to a National Graduate Student Award from the American Chemical Society and a National Graduate Student Paper Award from Lewis Publishing among other honors. His dissertation work prompted legislative changes on the transport and use of a chemical whose danger had only been previously suspected. While conducting research, Jason remained active in student life, serving two terms as the Agriculture Representative to the Graduate Student Association.
While in college, Jason first found a job at the University in the Biochemistry Department, then at a private lab where he worked his way up to Director of Operations. He then followed his passion for service to the state and became the senior petroleum chemist with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and Coordinator of the State’s Fuels Program, dealing with the public and the legislature to help ensure the quality of fuels Nevadans use and the air we breathe.
In 2002, Jason returned to the University as the Environmental Affairs Manager. His research and professional interests included environmental fate and analysis of contaminants, use of alternative fuels in increasing energy independence, waste minimization and environmental testing and compliance. His responsibilities included development and implementation of methods and programs to expand regulatory compliance, prevent pollution and improve overall sustainability of campus operations.
In 2005, Jason became the Government Affairs Manager for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada. At EDAWN, he assisted companies relocating or expanding in Northern Nevada byt helping them with environmental permits. He also served as the Industry Advisor for the Clean Energy initiative for EDAWN.
In February of 2008, Jason became the first Environmental Services Administrator for the City of Reno. Jason’s primary responsibility is to implement the Green initiative brought about by the City Council. His primary activities include leading the Green Team, implementing the action plan and communicating with the public. He loves being able to use his science background to improve his favorite city in the world.
Jason’s interest in public service has led him to volunteer for several political campaigns and become involved with a variety of professional and civic groups, including the Reno Host Lions Club, Friends and Alumni of the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, and State of Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners.
This commitment to service was taken to a new level in November 2002 when he was elected to the Nevada State Assembly. While serving in his first term, Jason was an active member of the Education, Judiciary, and Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining committees and served on several conference committees and sub-committees.
Jason’s public service changed in June of 2006 when Governor Kenny Guinn appointed him to represent District 11 of the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents. As a Regent, Jason works for the betterment of the higher education system. He serves on the Investment, Audit, Budget and Finance, and Research and Economic Development committees, the latter of which he chairs.
His hobbies include fishing, hunting, camping and sharing the splendor of the desert with surprised newcomers. He and Cindie, his wife of 23 years, are enjoying the perspective and remarkable stories of their son, 9-year-old Joseph.
